The Virgin Islands Conservation Society in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Department of Planning & Natural Resources Division of Coastal Zone Management announces the launch of the “VI Clean Coasts” campaign. This eco-certification program is open to any business in the USVI. The only requirement for the initial certification is the removal of all expanded polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) from the business. From there a custom program will be developed for each business to create their own eco-journey.

The main goals of VI Clean Coasts are to:
- Celebrate existing green practices
- Educate ourselves and others about single-use plastics
- Conduct impact surveys of businesses and exchange of best practices
- Aid in making acceptable changes through free consultations and Seed Grants to certified businesses.
VI Clean Coasts certification is a local initiative intended to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in the USVI. Single use plastics are detrimental to the environment, impacting every part of the ocean food chain as well as pose great risks to personal health of the VI community.
The VI Clean Coast program encourages businesses to take a proactive approach to “greening” their practices by offering environmental certification and grants to incentivizes the implementation of changes leading to the elimination of single-use plastics. As the sponsor of this initiative, DPNR is phasing out single use plastics cups from its offices and switching to paper cups. Employees are encouraged to use reusable cups and the department has already supplied dozens to its staff members.
