Commissioner Jean-Pierre L. Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources proudly announces the opening of the fifth annual “I AM DAVID HAMILTON JACKSON” student art exhibition at the Fort Frederik Museum. The exhibition will debut on Thursday, November 13th, with a public opening reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Launched in November 2021 by the Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (DLAM), this annual educational initiative honors the legacy of David Hamilton Jackson—an iconic figure in the fight for civil rights, freedom of the press, and labor organization in the Virgin Islands. Through this program, students explore Jackson’s life and work, using art as a medium to reflect on social justice, human rights, and their own roles as changemakers in their communities.
This year’s exhibition features symbolic self-portraits created by students of artist and educator Danica David, alongside artwork and writing inspired by Jackson’s legacy from Ms. Cleone Lynch’s high school students at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
“The ‘I AM David Hamilton Jackson’ art show is more than an exhibition—it’s a celebration of legacy, identity, and the enduring power of art to speak when words cannot,” said Amy DeSorbo, DLAM Director. “Five years strong, this show stands as a declaration of presence, pride, and purpose. Each year, we honor Mr. Jackson’s spirit by uplifting student voices that shape our cultural landscape through creativity, curiosity, and courage.”
The exhibition is free to attend on opening night and will remain on display during regular museum hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. General admission is $10, with free entry for students under 18 and a discounted rate of $5 for Virgin Islands residents.
