Commissioner Jean-Pierre L. Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Archives, Libraries and Museums, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Breast Cancer Project (VIBCP), will present the 2026 Art of Healing Exhibit at Fort Frederik Museum in Frederiksted beginning Friday, November 6, 2026.
An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibition, themed “Cancer Survivorship: Threads of Resilience, Healing Arts, Heritage & Culture,” will remain on display through January 31, 2027.
The exhibition features artwork created by cancer survivors and family members who participated in art classes and cultural activities organized by VIBCP in collaboration with arts and cultural organizations throughout St. Croix. Participants explored silk dyeing, watercolor, sea glass art, mixed media, cultural arts and wire sculpture.
“This project is dedicated to all the men and women of the Virgin Islands whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Through this program, we have created opportunities for healing, fostering deeper connections to our past while embracing the present and looking toward the future. United in hope for a cure, we are reminded that art saves lives,” said VIBCP co-founder Diane J. Hampton.
“Threads of Resilience celebrates the strength of cancer survivors and the power of art to inspire healing, preserve our cultural heritage and express hope,” said Amy Parker DeSorbo, Director of the Division of Archives, Libraries and Museums. “Our survivors are defined not by cancer, but by their courage, creativity and resilience.”
The series continues with “Making a Way,” led by artist Adrian Edwards, from 1 to 3 p.m. on November 24 at Fort Frederik Museum. The mixed-media workshop will draw inspiration from Adinkra symbols and Edwards’ exploration of African Caribbean cultural and spiritual experiences.
