Conservation Enforcement Officer The Conservation Enforcement Officer (CEO) enforces all rules and laws applicable in the protection and preservation of the Natural Environment, Fish and Wildlife and the Boating Safety Laws of the Virgin Islands. Employee must be a qualified peace officer and work on a rotating day and night shift which includes Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. Supervision is received from the Director of the Division of Environmental Enforcement or their designee within the Division.
DUTIES TO INCLUDE
- CEO’s report directly to the Director and Assistant Director of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources Environmental Enforcement Division;
- Board and inspect any boat engaged in hunting, fishing or transporting fisheries or wildlife products and to make routine safety checks of any numbered vessel in territorial waters.
- Makes arrest for violations of the conservation and boating laws of the territory or rules and regulations of the Division of Environmental Enforcement.
- Seize or take possession of Fish and Wild Life products which have been unlawfully caught, taken, processed or transported.
- Enforce rules and regulations pertaining to Hunting and Fishing in all territorial lands.
- Work with the Virgin Islands Police Department, United States Coast Guard and National Park Service when required.
- Inspect Coastal Zone to determine if any alterations are being made without the proper permits and inspect all dredging and shoreline activities.
- Patrol territorial lands and waters by boat, foot and motor vehicle to enforce applicable laws and regulations.
- Performs other related duties.
REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
- Maintain a minimal standard of physical fitness.
- Psychological/Medical examination by a qualified medical examiner.
- Completion of a (26) Twenty-six week police academy training.
- V.I. Driver’s License and able to operate four-wheel drive vehicles, used for towing boats and trailers on steep and unpaved roads.
- Conviction of a felony, misdemeanor of other violation of law may bar examination and appointment.
SKILLS
- Knowledge of rules and regulations relative to territorial waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Environmental Control.
- Knowledge of the Virgin Islands Motor Boat Act and Federal Safe Boating Act of 1971 as amended, and Federal Rules and Regulations related to submerged lands and preservation of the beach fronts.
- Must be familiar with waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands, backroads and inaccessible areas.
- Knowledge of fish, aquatic products and wildlife of the Virgin Islands.
- Ability to use firearms, exercise good judgement and react quickly and calmly during emergencies, swim and to deal tactfully and impartially with the public.
