Parks Retreat

The Division of Territorial Parks and Protected Areas team embarked on several educational adventures during the new division’s first team retreat in St. Croix on July 25th and 26th.

On day one, the team, led by Director Kitty Edwards, set out on a tour of the Southgate Coastal Reserve in the East End. St. Croix Environmental Association’s Executive Director Jennifer Valiulus introduced Team TPPA to the vast protected area that is home to a mangrove forest, native plants and trees, and a bird blind located in the perfect spot to view the more than100 species of birds that live on the reserve. A reforestation effort is underway that will soon bring the reserve back to its full glory.

Later that day, Team TPPA was able to travel further east to do a self-guided hike up Goat Hill, a part of the Jack and Issacs Bay Preserve managed by The Nature Conservancy. After stopping along the route to observe plants, trees, insects, and to catch their breath, team members were able to experience magnificent views at the first overlook. However, the amazing panoramic views of St. Croix were at the very top of the steep elevation. Hiking Goat Hill was a lively and challenging teambuilding experience. Along the path, team members had a unique opportunity to discuss different ways that preserved areas can be both protected and explored.

The second day of Team TPPA’s retreat was just as stimulating as the first. Traversing the West End of the island, the team drove along the winding rain forest roads toward Ridge to Reef Farm, operated by director Nate Olive. The massive farm produces organic vegetables and livestock while providing the community with opportunities for bush experiences and farm to table meals. Team TPPA toured the property, learned about native plants, and ate anything edible along the way.

Although the division’s first retreat was condensed into two days, it was an informative experience that served as inspiration for the work they seek to do: identify conservation areas and determine ways to make them accessible to the community.
