Marine Debris

The Division of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) continues to comprehensively manage and reduce impacts to the ocean and coastal resources of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Among those impacts is marine debris, which is any persistent solid material that is manufactured or processed and directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally, disposed of or abandoned into the marine environment. Marine debris has been a long-standing environmental issue in the Territory and the need to address this extensive issue has been identified by the USVI marine debris community as an imperative action! Within CZM, our Marine Debris Coordinator focuses on the implementation of the USVI Marine Debris Action Plan (MDAP); a living document that will coordinate current marine actions across the Territory and prioritize and plan future actions needed for lasting debris prevention and reduction.
