Land Conservation & Park Development

Pillar II focuses on protecting important natural areas in the USVI and turning them into well-managed public parks. The goal is to conserve land for the community, support wildlife, and create safe outdoor spaces for Virgin Islanders. The territory will improve access, add educational signs, and develop trails and gathering areas. Some of the properties included in this effort are Perseverance Bay, Fish Bay, Maroon Ridge, Altona Lagoon and Lowry Hill. Altogether, this pillar helps safeguard key landscapes while giving residents and visitors healthier, more resilient places to enjoy.

Perseverance Bay, St. Thomas

Tucked beneath a hillside on the western end of St. Thomas, Perseverance Bay is a place rich with history and natural beauty. Once home to enslaved workers who endured life on a plantation, the bay holds remnants of the past in the form of ruins across the property. Accessible by winding trails lined with native plants and trees, the area invites exploration and reflection.

Fish Bay, St. John

St. John, renowned for its stunning and picturesque landscapes, is home to the Fish Bay watershed. It’s a vibrant area with waterfalls, ghuts, and diverse marine life. As you explore its trails, you’ll uncover a magnificent ecosystem and breathtaking views at every turn. Conservation efforts in this region aim to support research and restoration, ensuring the long-term health and resilience of this unique natural environment within the park.

Maroon Sanctuary Park, St. Croix

The first and largest park in the Territorial Parks System, located in the northwest quadrant of St. Croix holds deep historical and cultural significance. Once a refuge for runaway enslaved individuals, this sacred landscape is being preserved for the people of the Virgin Islands to explore and honor for generations to come. Rich in archaeological artifacts and historical remnants, Maroon Ridge tells the story of the Maroons who found sanctuary in its lush terrain whose natural resources offered both protection and a chance at freedom.

Altona Lagoon, St. Croix

This community-centered park is home to a variety of mangrove species and serves as a vibrant fishing hub. Visitors can stroll along the shoreline, hike scenic trails, and explore the unique waterways while engaging in activities that blend fitness, fun, and scientific discovery. The Altona Lagoon Park aims to strengthen the connection between people and nature, fostering stewardship and appreciation for this vital ecosystem.

Lowry Hill, St. Croix

The Lowry Hill property is an undeveloped, breathtaking landscape on fifty-three acres near the southeastern shore of St. Croix. Lowry Hill offers sweeping views of the island’s natural beauty. It also serves as a natural corridor with trails that connect to the Great Pond watershed. Visitors who explore this property will enjoy a peaceful experience in one of the island’s most stunning protected areas.
